Chapter Thirty

Nate

Exiting Paxton’s home office about an hour later with a signed contract and a handshake, we made our way out to the back deck where Casey and Lynda were sitting. Paxton rubbed his hands together. “How about we toast the deal with something stronger than coffee?” he said, nodding to where a small table was set out with a carafe of coffee and cups.

“Not for me, I’m afraid, Paxton. I have to drive back into Portland, and I have an early flight tomorrow, but I wouldn’t say no to a coffee before I leave,” Ben said, helping himself and taking a seat next to Casey. Again, and not for the first time tonight, his actions annoyed me. Of all the seats he had to choose from, he just had to sit there, didn’t he? “Keep it cool, he’s just a client, and he’ll be leaving soon,” I told myself because I had to admit, I had been doing a stellar job of holding it in for most of the night with this guy. I mean, he seemed nice enough, but his eyes and body language were telling me that he liked what he saw when he looked at Casey, and he’d been doing that ever since we arrived. I knew Paxton noticed, as well, by the warnings he kept throwing at me with his eyes, the expression on his face, and the elbow to the ribs I got as we walked into his office. I guess I shouldn’t be shocked that he liked what he saw. Casey was a very beautiful and intelligent woman and with her relaxed conversation and easy personality, not to mention the cute accent, she was the full package for any man to be attracted to. The difference was that she was my full package, which to me, meant, “Keep your eyes to yourself, buddy, before you lose them permanently.” And I wasn’t sure if he thought that I didn’t notice that he was eye fucking her the whole time we were all here in conversation or if he was just stupidly cocky. Watching as Casey turned to say something to Lynda, I watched as his eyes drifted down to her ass, and I think my blood pressure just pumped into my brain at turbo speed with anger because it was enough to make me stand up so fast, the chair made a loud scraping noise along the wooden deck, causing everyone’s head turn toward me in question.

“Sorry, just a little cramp,” I said as I rubbed at an imaginary painful spot on my calf.

“You alright?” Casey asked.

“Yeah, fine.”

Ben stood, placed his cup on the table, and reached for his suit jacket that lay across the back of one of the sun beds. “Well, I think I need to hit the road before it gets too late, but thank you for everything, including the food and the company,” he said as he reached into the inside pocket of his jacket, pulling out two gold envelopes and handing them to Paxton.
